Eat Your Greens!

Did you know that eating your fruits and vegetables has many benefits?  Today we will look a bit more closely at the benefits you get when you eat your greens!

But before going there, it is important to know that eating all the different colours is needed in order to receive all the amazing benefits fruits and veggies have to offer.

Why?

Because plants produce phytonutrients (plant nutrients) which helps to protect them from the environment and it is believed that the phytonutrients provide the same health benefits to us.

Each colour is related to the phytonutrient that the plant contains which means a different set of health benefits depending on the colour.

It is recommended that you eat 2 servings of fruit AND 5 servings of vegetables per day in order to reap all the benefits.

Let’s take a look at the colour GREEN.  We will look at the other colours in the upcoming blogs.

Why eat green?

  1. Green fruits and vegetables can protect your eye health
  2. Rich in fibre, folate, potassium, vitamins A, C, E, and K.
  3. The essential nutrients found in both green fruits and vegetables can help:
      • detoxify your body
      • regulate your digestion
      • improve your immune system
      • protect you from cancer
      • lower LDL cholesterol

4. Can help reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.

5. Research is starting to show that it may even slow down cognitive decline.

Following is a list of some great tasting green fruits or vegetables that you can add to your diet.

      • Asparagus
      • Broccoli
      • Brussel sprouts
      • Beans
      • Kale
      • Lettuce (the greener the better)
      • Spinach
      • Avocado
      • Green apples
      • Green grapes
      • Kiwis
      • Limes

You can also include an Organic Greens high nutrient superfood to your daily consumption of greens…especially if you are having a hard time getting the recommended amount into your body.

I personally add a scoop of Organic Greens to my diet daily.  I just add it to my morning shake or will just add water and drink it.

Following are some tips on how you could get your daily greens:

  • Toss a handful of fresh spinach or kale into your morning smoothie
  • Add greens to your scrambled eggs.
  • Have a salad for lunch.
  • Eat a side of greens with your dinner.
  • Have a fruit as one of your snacks
  • Have 1/2 a large avocado with some Himalayan sea salt as a snack (my favourite!)

I challenge you to try and add 1 green fruit or vegetable to your day.  Let me know how it goes!
