Are You Embracing Aging!?

Your mind is powerful and extraordinary!  Put it to good use!

You can listen in to the podast (11 mins long) or read the blog below.  Whichever you prefer!

Are you embracing the aging process?

I know I am, and once you transition into acceptance of getting older and embrace aging, you are headed for a life of vitality.

You will find it easier to move forward in life, to get through the challenges that life may throw at you and to really enjoy all the good that comes your way.

And when you understand and accept that change is part of life, you will make decisions and choices based on what you need to live a healthy life.

Embracing aging does not mean that you deny you are getting older but that you accept it so that you can move forward and live the life you want to live.

Don’t let a number get in the way of you living your best life.

The best part about aging is that you have the knowledge and life experience to handle situations that arise.

You are not as stressed anymore, you are not bothered by what people think or say about you, and you are more comfortable with who you are as a person.

It’s wonderful!  So, Recognize the WISDOM and FREEDOM that comes from aging and have some fun!

I believe the first thing that needs to happen, so that you can embrace aging is to have the right mindset.

Mindset is the key to everything you do in life.

Because With the right mindset, you WILL be able to reach your goals

With the right mindset you WILL make decisions and choices that will have a positive impact on your life and wellbeing.

Of course there are other factors such as nutrition, exercise, and sleep that will affect your life and ability to live it the best way you can, however, the first step is your mindset.

So tell yourself that age is just a number and it’s not age that dictates what you can or can’t do.

We may slow down, as my knees will tell me 7 surgeries later, but that doesn’t mean I have to stop doing things. It’s just different.

For example, my knees are shot so running a marathon is out of the question, however, I can still walk and get in shape.

By the way, walking is an excellent activity!

It’s all about finding what works for you.

Here’s a great quote from Bernard Shaw … I love this quote

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old;
we grow old because we stop playing.”

Aging is going to happen and you can’t avoid it. But you can shift your mindset

You might be starting a new chapter in your life. Maybe your children have left the nest; maybe you’re in a new relationship; maybe you’re a grandparent, maybe you started a new job or you’re retired.

It might be that you’re now free to take up a new activity, for me it’s to golf. Maybe you would like to travel more, join a group, hike, bike, be a photographer, play a guitar, piano, etc.

What is something that you always wanted to do?

Do you believe in yourself and your ability to age well and with vitality?

How do you get your mindset to where it needs to be?

Well, by making a few changes to the way you think.

Following are 6 tips that can help you to do just that.  Start by picking one or two and see what works for you!

  1. Visualize yourself in the FUTURE.

Are you out walking, travelling, swimming, playing with your grandkids or taking your dog for a walk.

Are you losing weight, improving your blood sugar levels, lowering your cholesterol. Are you feeling on top of the world … better than you have felt in a long time.

Write it all down. Really describe it. I want you to experience the sweet taste of success!

Then read it over and over again. Read it first thing in the morning and before you go to bed.

This exercise is extremely powerful! As it gives you a deep reason for making change.

  2. Don’t let your inner critic tell you that you can’t do something! That you’re too old!

If she tells you that you are silly to think of even trying to play a guitar or join the dance group that is happening every Thursday night, then tell her ‘whoa there’. I am going to try it out and see what comes of it.

If you were someone who always tried to lose weight only to gain it back again, your inner critic will tell you that you will never be able to lose weight and why bother … you’re too old now.

But that is not true. With the right program and support and shift in mindset you can.

Be aware of this self talk and don’t let it stop you from trying things.

Once you are aware of it, you can try and rewrite the script.

  3. Embrace Change

This doesn’t mean changing your life completely around.  It is all about putting some new habits into place that can help you feel amazing, confident, and proud.

If your energy level is low, then you can greatly improve it by working on your nutritional habits, doing regular activity, or improving your sleep.

Change does take time and patience … don’t give up on it. Take one habit and work on it and then move on to the next.

And remember that perfection does not exist.  If you falter, no worries, you just pick it back up and keep moving forward one step at a time.

At times it may feel like 2 steps forward and 1 back but you are still moving forward and over time these small changes will lead to big results.

  4. Start talking about what you are going to do today!

Are you going for a walk, or are you going for lunch with friends, are you taking that photography class you always wanted to take.

Don’t sit around discussing how your joints ache, how your memory isn’t what it used to be, how your clothes are too tight, how you can’t do this or cant do that.

This shift in conversation will make a big difference! You’ll have a much brighter outlook on your life, and you will be happier.

The thing about mindset is that whatever you believe or tell yourself, will come true.

Henry Ford said: “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right!

  5. Spend some time outside.

Go for a walk, jog, hike and look around you at all the beauty, notice the greenery, the flowers, the water, the birds; and, if it is winter time, the sparkling snow and anything else that is around. Take in the different smells, the grass, flowers, BBQs, etc. feel the wind or the warmth of the sun on your face.

Just taking some time to do this will lift your spirits and open your mind to life around you. It is a wonderful way to alleviate stress and anxiety.

  6. And my final tip, act as if you are 10 or 20 years younger!

If you believe you are 40 instead of 60, things just might be different.  Anyways isn’t 60 the new 40 now!

Are you going to incorporate any of these strategies? If so, I would love to know which ones you will start with?

Mindset is part of the equation to embracing aging and health, and I believe it is the biggest part.

However in addition to having the right mindset, it is important to incorporate a variety of lifestyle changes: you want to have fun and laugh as much as you can; do different types of activity; incorporate good nutrition, be mindful; have positive social interactions; and practice gratitude.
